The Thought Has Found Words

Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words.

– Robert Frost

The very lovely Sandy Auden put this up on Facebook yesterday and it got me thinking about how different people define poetry. I think that a lot of people think that poetry is just what we are taught of poetry in schools.

I have written a four hundred line poem and a two line poem. Sometimes poets rhyme and others don’t. Some poets rap or sing. Opera is poetry and so is graffiti.

Perhaps before we make kids in school read a set list of twenty five poems we should try and let them find their own definitions of what they think poetry is and what they can take away from it. And maybe once we each decide what we want to take from poetry we can choose to give more to it as well.
