Reading “Letters to Five Artists”

I stumbled across Letters to Five Artists by John Wain in the library and settled in to read it.

It was a very different and unusually effective way of approaching a collection. Each section addresses an artist who is connected to the poet. These long and varied poems give a fantastic sense of personality. They are letters, thank you notes and essays all in one. Read in order they give a wonderful idea of Wain himself and express his view of the world. I love seeing new ways of writing, of connecting and of reading. Definitely worth checking out.

Well, now it is all over
and the plains have dwindled
to a geographical expression
a certain colour on the map, no more
